Lamplight Gourd Santa

The weather forecast says it's sunny outside, but it actually looks rather frightful! Snow covered peaks are wreathed in light snow showers and it's drizzling here in the valley. I hope it doesn't cool off as that would make travel home a bit dicey. Perhaps I should bring Lamplight Santa with me to light the way, just in case. One thing I know for sure, I hope to leave early, as it's hard to see black cows out on the freeway at night. Or I could just follow a semi truck home and let him be my cattle guard....lol.

So what all that has to do with the Santa above is just in the phrase, "the weather outside is frightful", echoes of Christmas still playing in my mind. :-) Time to finish packing and then see where my Hive updates are going to as they haven't been hitting my inbox. More of my "hippie art" as hubby calls, it, which has brought out the freedom in creativity in me I suppose. My first one will be a Valentine piece, with love all through it. Still pondering the color scheme, but I think I have it nailed. First off I need to gesso this though as the texture will wipe off if I don't.

A sunny sunflower I started last Autumn before everything got crazy around here. Time to add another layer of paint, and wipe and dab, and push color around.

Something for winter, that I didn't get to finish, so I thought I'd better get to this one and not leave it sitting around. I will finish it and then add it to my website or etsy shop, haven't decided yet. There are so many possibilities for themes with these, but I first want to try some random abstracts, just for giggles. What medium gives you the most freedom of expression?

Possible Dreams... WIPS

Sometimes I jump the gun on creativity and don't plan things out, just dive in and start mushing and mashing clay here and there to get a feel for where I want to go with a piece. The two forms to the right are those sort of soon to be creations. I have an idea, but I will let them play out as I add a bit of clay here and there to bring out their personality.
The bunny to the left was rough sketched to give me some direction, and he's coming along pretty well. Can you see the little vest taking shape? He will have legs and feet, but I'm still trying to decide their shape. I'm thinking I will go a bit pudgy, we shall see. I will be heading back home tonight for a couple of days of respite and to get rejuvenated for the return to the folks home. These are all going with me and I hope to have them ready to paint by Saturday. Wish me luck, I may need it! The biggest challenge will be going home and not looking at the chores that may need to be done. Tomorrow will be an all creative day, Saturday we can clean and get ready to come back. There's probably not much to do anyway but I tend to obsess about those sorts of things. Can you ignore the dust bunnies and still be fully creative? If so, how do you do it????

New Year...new WIPS

I'm not sure how far I will get on these projects as I'm at the in-laws trying to keep them happy while sneaking away once in awhile to my tiny room to work. Not that my in-laws are hard to please, but Dad is only partly ambulatory and Mom has dementia, so I'm never sure which Mom I get to deal with and whether or not I'm doing all I can to make Dad's last days here comfortable as possible. For now, in keeping with my ever vigilant effort to upcycle as I create I've got a lightbulb bunny in the works.

When I saw this remote I knew exactly what I could do with this, but first I checked to make sure there were no Magnavox TV's here anymore....lol and I've started the project, but will reveal more at a later date. It's amazing the things folks collect, even those who tend to toss everything not nailed down. My in-laws are no exception so I have a treasure trove of goodies to possibly turn into folk art. I've already connived a vintage button collection and Japanese coin away, hopefully that won't count as the inheritance...;-). Anyhew, I must dash off to the dentist for a cleaning and check up. What do you think I will do with this remote?

A friend of mine found a stash of awesome bobbins at a yard sale this last spring and immediately called me to see if I wanted them, of course I said yes! She bargained and dickered so I had a nice collection of unique bobbins to play with when I got to Oregon.

She collects Santas and knows what I do, so she is always on the look out for things she thinks I might want to create Santas from. Friends are so wonderful and give us another reason to believe....

dancing in my head, I went to sleep having finally finished the gingerbread house and taken it down to Macey's for their contest. Surprised at all the entries, I will now anxiously await the announcement of the winners. Macey's is closed on Sundays, which is almost unheard of for a grocery store, but they believe in honoring the Sabbath and giving their employees a day of rest. I really like that, and wish more businesses thought that way. There was a time they did.

See how many different candies and goodies you can find in this design. For me, the philosophy of creating a gingerbread house is to utilize as many different candies in a design as possible, but still have the house look pretty and inviting. The idea is to make a gingerbread house look yummy, don't you think?

Candy selection has changed over the years, so that creates a new challenge, but I've already had my 3 am creative muse where I thought of ways to use what I did find available, for next year. I'd better write them down though as I know I will forget. I need to get ready for church, and my class of 7-8 year olds, but I wanted to share what I've been up to this week.
This was the last major project of the year, everything else is going to be slow and perhaps will teach me to really think through what I do rather than launch into creativity without a real plan. My father-in-law is struggling through his last days here on earth, and I'm the primary caretaker so although I may have a little time to create, for the most part my days are filled with keeping him comfortable, and helping my family deal with this. I've always tried to find a special way to serve others this time of year, but this time I need not look any farther than my own family. It's a hard but special time as we prepare for the change in our family, with gratitude that we know that Heavenly Father will be waiting for Dad, and He and the Savior will welcome him home with loving and open arms. What more can we do at this time of year, but to serve as we have been served?

I often use rice in a tub to help steady what I'm working on, or for a place to put things to dry. I had so many little snowman heads though that I had to resort to a pizza pan to keep the little darlings from rolling over and crushing their hats. What do you use?

Primitive Vintage Victorian Style Folk Art Driftwood Santa

I have a confession to make. I'm one of those folks who find it very annoying to see Christmas decor up in stores before we've celebrated Thanksgiving. I know, I know, sounds contradictory doesn't it? Lol. Yes, in some ways it is, but I so love the colors and feel of Autumn and harvest time, that I want to savor it as much as possible. My heart swells at the sight of freshly harvested fields, pumpkins stacked on porches, warm apple cider steaming in mugs.
Sure, I have been creating Christmas art for months now, but due to the nature of the buying public, and the need to be ahead of the game, I must do what I do. So being the accommodating person that I am, I will be offering a multitude of Santa pieces on ebay as well as etsy and Reasons to Believe . The second of three posts today, I'm trying to squeeze in computer duties with sculpting. It's been crazy busy here and there, which means I'm busy at home and at the in-laws. I've sequestered myself into my apartment to get ready for a show at the Nugget here in Wendover this Saturday, so snowman heads are popping up all over, little Santa figures are coming to life, as well as an angel or two. An Amber Colored Autumn....

Monday Muse....The Hidden Color

It's always a marvel when the hidden color of leaves reveal themselves in the twilight of their existence. As the green fades away we are blessed with an abundance of vibrant color. It's as if Autumn is saying, "I will go out in a blaze of glory!", as she waits for Winter to arrive.

Who can doubt the hand of God and His handiwork when finding such an intricately "painted" leaf as this one, with it's dabs of gold, red, and orange?

Falling Leaves

As I rounded the corner into Lostine, a tiny burg not far away from where our Oregon home is, I was met with a literal wall of golden leaves, shimmering in the sunlight. "Wow! I wish I had known about this before I came into town so I could stop and take a photo. I will on the way back to Utah Thursday, as it was so pretty! It reminded me of Autumn in Alaska, with the paper birch brilliant with a Midas touch of gold, against the deep green of spruce and the pastels of the cloud laced skies.

There is a strong breeze blowing here, and the leaves are turning gold on our tall willow. They are falling to the ground, covering the grass with a blanket of leaves, so I will have to rake before I mow tomorrow. The dried leaves are skittering across the pavement, as if they are running away. Ahhhhh, the joys of Autumn.

Autumn Elements...

Another of my Autumn clothing favorites was pulled out of storage, and thus the inspiration in part for this necklace. I figure that if I want to sell jewelry, it doesn't hurt to be a walking advertisement for what I do. Or, it's probably a great excuse to make jewelry for myself. :-) This soft burnt orange faux suede top matches a skirt with the many colors of this piece. So now I'm ready to show off some more new work as we head to the city today for temple and feasting at Benihana.

Brass acorn beads, vibrant ruby Lucite leaves, moss green pearls and soft turquoise twists are complimented by gray wood beads in this Autumn elements necklace. I found a new bead store in Salt Lake City, and while some of the beads I know I can get much cheaper on ebay, they had some pieces that I've not seen in my internet travels through bead land.

Of course, what jewelry ensemble would be complete without matching earrings? Who knew jewelry making would be so addicting? Taking a bite out of Halloween

Ahhh, Jackson, all dressed up for Halloween festivities. We hear you've been taste testing the other trick or treaters, naughty boy!

To make matters worse, your pet spidey there has been scaring all the children. Now who can have a party with all that going on?!

Now Jackson, if you promise to behave, you can stay at the party, otherwise, you will be sent back to your cave where you belong!

Now please don't think I'm being too hard on Jackson, he has been giving me fits since I started working on him. His arms kept going where they shouldn't have, he wanted to tilt each time I added another layer of clay to his light bulb body, and then he would try and bite me as I painted his gourd head and the rest of him. I think I may need to go get some shots, if there is such a thing.... Well, I finally was able to finish him and get his little spidey friend put together, along with his little treat bucket. He's ready to come party at your house and promises to not take up much room at 13 + inches tall. Jackson will have no twins, so he is a one of a kind original who comes signed and dated. Everywhere I go..... I sure had fun pulling out the green tub and going through all my Autumn decor! I've hung the garlands, pulled out all the Halloween decor, and realize I need to buy a collectible for this year! Well, I may just have to run over to the American Holiday Artists Studios site and see what I can find. Hee, hee, I just found something to add to my collection! Yay!

I just love it when a plan comes together! I had visions of fruit coming out of the tall Santa basket base last year, but just couldn't decide whether I wanted to paint, sculpt or add the fruit to this piece. I do love the vintage and antique fruits available at Blumchens so I dove right in and he came out just as I'd hoped! I do wish I could get a better photo of him as mine just don't do him justice, but here's a peek at him anyway.

A simple and slightly rustic Santa is what I was going for here, and it looks as if that's what I got. I hand painted greenery and cones around his hat, and again, the photos just don't quite do him justice, but it is what it is.

Don't you just love the long loopy hat on this jolly fella?

This little guy is a small but charming Santa that would go well with any collection. Now to decide where they will end up....

are waiting to be finished. Somehow our creator thinks she needs to feed her man person, and not attend to us. WELL!!! Ummmm, oh, excuse us, we forgot we are supposed to be jolly for a moment.... Okay, she says she will get to us later, whatever that means, but in the meantime here we sit. Guess we are going to have to wait until the morning because they are watching a movie later. Hey! We are sitting with a birds eye view of the TV.....wonder if the movie is any good.....will let you know tomorrow.

I think they are about to run me out of my work room here, some are missing eyebrows, some faces, some are done, but all are feeling a bit crowded. I know I sure am, along with the waning evening light and one little light bulb to help me, I guess it's time to stop for now.

Doesn't this jolly Santa have a look of anticipation for the coming season? I hope I can capture his twinkle when I paint him.

Eeeek, alien Santa! Well actually he's just waiting for the next step, but he's in drying mode right now. The spool Santa hasn't told me yet whether he should have arms or not. He better hurry though as I'm getting a bit impatient to get things done!

I actually got some pieces done while working at the Utah State Fair last week. I had such fun meeting so many nice people, and the best part is, they asked me to come back! I may have some classes to teach as well as a nice bonus to this.

I think I've spent one of the busiest weeks of my life this past one, trying to catch up and just "do" things I've wanted or needed to do. There was the garage sale to get ready for, finish these paintings, finish a batch of Santas which I will have to share in another post....

work at Roxy's most of the week, pick blackberries and process them, More work at Roxy's....

I re- worked the face on this gourd bust, but am debating making him look bronzed.....

finishing this little pumpkin guy, texturing and painting my living room walls.....still need to finishing glazing them, and then tonight I will need to clean....whew! I have one Halloween piece to finish, another Santa, and then it's sculpting on more....no rest for the wicked.....

I must be a glutton for punishment. After running 3 1/2 miles I came home and finished the trim on the roof of the garage, patched some repaired holes in the house siding, (ugh, renters!), and then got a wild hair to repair the walls in my living room and paint. I pulled off all the baseboards and window trim, taped the seams and cracks, and slathered joint compound all over the walls. Tomorrow we are driving to Spokane to go to the temple and then I will be back hopefully in time to paint. Friday is my first day tending the store for Roxy, a gallery owner who is running down to her sister's to help with her BIL as he had back surgery today. I will get the opportunity to set up and work on my sculpting and painting while tending the place, and plan on making the most of it. Friday night we are having a Shelf Reliance demo at my place, so I must get the walls done and things put back together before folks show up. Gee, think I have enough to do? Well, it's fun and games time as 4 AM comes very early....

Today started out with a bike ride, and then I held my breath as I climbed our 18 foot ladder to finish the trim on the back of the garage. It wouldn't have been quite so bad if the ground the ladder stood on was level, but it's in an alley where there are boulders here and there, weeds that have been matted down, and it appears that while we are gone, someone likes to use our side of the alley to dump their junk. UGH! So, I crept up the ladder and fastened the paint bucket to one of the rungs, and gingerly reached upward to paint the areas that hadn't gotten done two years ago. Long story, but hey I finally got it done! Whew! I didn't even drop the paint bucket, well okay not this morning anyway. Yes, it hit the gravel in front of the garage when I was working there tonight. Almost done, have one easy side to do, yay! Oh and some touch ups as I got yellow on the red. Ooops! Then it's on to the living room. It's bugging me to death to see the scuffs and marks from a renter and our house sitter. Besides, I want to feel like I accomplished something here this year. So tomorrow I will tape and mud cracks and seams, and then texture and paint, whoohoo. I did get some work on creations done as well, it's fun what you can do with a light bulb. I will be sealing this little guy and some other pieces before antiquing. Okay, I'll stop already....here's the next clues......

I bet you thought I forgot, huh?! Well no, but here's how my day went. At 4:45 this morning I got up to well, you know, and as I got back into bed the phone rings. "Who could that be? Oh, my Amanda!" So I pick up the phone, "Hello? Helloooo?, Amanda....answer the phone!!!!! AMANDAAAAAA!!!!" My daughter had done it again, she was out for a bike ride in the wee morning hours in Fairbanks, and she accidently speed dialed me. Happens a lot. I think she might need to find a different number for me. So I tried to go back to sleep, but no dice. I went for a run, almost 3 and a half miles, and then came back and canned cherries, some rhubarb and cherry, raspberry, rhubarb and cranberry conserve. Don't they look yummy? After that it was time to go outside and see what damage I could do out there.

I pulled weeds around my berries, unstrangled the hold some netting had on my plum tree, and knocked some wasp nests off the garage peaks so I can paint the trim when the weather warms up. I watered plants, came back in, showered, lunch and time to paint. Here's the progress I've made, and somewhere in this pile is the giveaway piece. Hmmmmmm, which one will it be? Then I had a widow neighbor over for dinner, and went for a walk to work off the dessert we had.
Now, more fun and games! I boobooed yesterday as I forgot this posts on the Hive as well. So all you Hivers who might want to try and take a stab, I will count the first right guess on the Hive as well.

A Country Style Santa, or is that Primitive, Rustic, Northwoods?

I googled Northwoods Santas and guess what?! My Santa listing on Reasons to Believe came up top of the list. Wow! I'm going to have to give Scott a high five for that one! Anyhew.... Santas come in all sorts of shapes and styles. Fat, skinny, tall short, round, smiling or serious, or even frowning!

I don't know about you, but sometimes it's hard to let everything you create go out the door for someone else. Sure, we all enjoy the joy and pleasure folks get from our creations, but sometimes don't you just want to keep something for yourself?
I decided to get ahead of that and just create a necklace and earrings set to go with a western shirt I have. Funny thing, the shirt is almost too big for me now, but hey, I can still wear it so why not? The colors are compatible with other items of clothing in my closet so its a win/win! I wore this to watch the Chief Joseph Days parade, and got several compliments on the necklace which is a pay off wouldn't you say? Giggle!
It's time to put this set away though as we are going on a picnic out in the woods, and then on to fishing. Not the sort of thing you wear to the lake where the only company you have are folks in jeans and t-shirts or cattle or deer and a heron or flock of geese. I'm thinking I want a nice sweater to wear this with for Autumn time...what do you think?

Wednesday's WIP's Wild Horses and Santas?

Yesterday marked the opening of Chief Joseph Days here in Wallowa County with the Bucking Horse Stampede down main street in Joseph. I had a front row seat of sorts as I was able to set up a table and work on some of my Santa's in front of Missy's Uptown Art Gallery. What fun that was, with all sorts of interesting folks stopping by to watch and chat! It also gave me insight as to what people are thinking about my work. I garnered a couple of potential collectors, and met folks that have already bought a couple of pieces or are interested, so that was a wonderful thing. I will be able to do more demo work on Friday in front of the same gallery, right after the Kiddie Parade, and another gallery wants me to do the same at her place. One of my larger driftwood Santas sold last week, along with a fish wall hanging so I'm raring to get some more work done.

Oh, and the horses finally found their way down through town, running through at a "stampede" pace, which was much better than last year, as you can see in the above picture when they seemed to stop to pose for photos in front of the bowling alley....lol.

Brigham Young - Creator, Inventor

Although he is probably most known by non-Mormons as the man who led the church into the Salt Lake Valley way back in 1847, there is a side to this amazing man that many don't know. It's Pioneer Day today, the day we of the LDS faith commemorate the sacrifices the early pioneers made to trek to Utah where they could live in peace. So I thought I would share a bit of information about a man who not only was an early prophet and leader of our church, but a city builder, and amazing carpenter and wood worker.
As a young apprentice in a boat painting shop he created an invention to crush the dye used in making the paints.

He was a master carpenter and wood worker who built door fittings, carved mantle pieces and various pieces of furniture still found in the old homes around Auburn, New York.
Not only was he a wise leader, but he built homes cities. An amazing man that I thought I would share a bit about with you.

Cowgirl Chic and Vintage Button Magic

It's rodeo time in Joseph, Oregon, with Chief Joseph days right around the corner so all the local shops have cowboyed, or dolled up their windows with everything western. We kick off the big week with the wild bucking horse stampede on Tuesday, then Wednesday night the rodeos start. For all you closet rodeo queens, or styling cowgirls, I've created a chunky but chic faux turquoise and large pearl piece. Can't you see some cowboy's sweetheart dancing the night away at the Thunder Room with this lovely necklace around her neck?

No ensemble is complete without earrings to match. Some lil darlin will dazzle all the men next week for sure!

A match made in heaven was formed with these large vintage button and the flat shell beads. I've been trying to pull something together with the pearly brown and white beads, but couldn't quite do it until I got back to Oregon and found the vintage button stash I'd left here. The delicious dark chocolate brown pearls and sparkly crystal beads compliment the overall collection of beads and button. Copper chain was a perfect choice to finish this necklace with. I'm making one similar for me because I like how this design turned out. What color would you have used with this button?

Another cowgirl chic piece, complete with ox brass beads, deep red crystal beads and Howlite turquoise beads.

I so wish I had another button like this one to create with as there are so many possibilities for use, but here's a fun and funky version that was a conversation piece at the Westsider's dinner last night. The greens are really more of a teal, but are showing up as more of a true green on my screen. Pearl beads, vintage shell buttons, copper flowers and findings all came together to showcase this awesome button.

I Love Halloween! A new jewelry collection from Simply Sheryl's

I have a new addiction...... the good thing is there are no calories, harmful chemicals or weight gain involved! Okay, there is a down side, it can be a bit costly unless I put a limit on my spending, but I am really really enjoying making jewelry. It's sooo hard to just buy one thing when I run in to find some jump rings, or a tool or something. I was walking through the bead aisle of my favorite local store and spied some black ceramic hearts, which led me to the orange ceramic beads, and then to the off white shell beads and on it went. I immediately saw Halloween when I saw those hearts, probably because a good number of my contemporaries love creating Halloween. Thus my I Love Halloween collection was born.

My first piece includes OX brass findings and an adorable owl charm, along with all the afore mentioned beads.

At 24 inches long it will be perfect for the colder weather clothing, I can see this dressing up a very cool sweater or cowel neck top. Perhaps something layered but what ever you wear this with you are sure to get attention. Stop by Simply Sheryl's at etsy for more information.

Copper and Turquoise and Silver Together...why not?!

When I was 13 Mom decided to make us some clothes for the upcoming school year. Money was tight, so we marched on down to the fabric store in Enterprise, and got to pick out the colors of our outfits. I chose a pretty turquoise fabric for a skirt and reversible vest set she was making, and along with that some chocolate brown velveteen. The vest had button holes on each side so that three chain and button set could keep the vest laying down nicely in the front. I really loved the combination of the brown with the turquoise, just like in this necklace I've put together.

Granted, chocolate brown and copper are not the same, but the antiqued tone to the copper findings and chain in this piece are very earthy and go well together with the turquoise colored pendant and beads.

The silver tone to the hinged bail and spacer beads makes a nice contrast to the copper, the heishi shell spacers are a lovely dark and light brown mix. Another fun creation you can find at Simply Sheryl's

A trip to the orient.....

I had so much fun putting this necklace together! It took me back to the days, when as a child I lived in Taiwan. What an interesting adventure that was, with water buffalo taking a bath in the river next to the rice patties below our home. Often, when we would be out playing on the patio in our inflatable pool the Taiwanese children would be coming home from school. They would giggle and point at us, waving and smiling as they trudged up the dirt road to their tiny huts.

We loved to go to Taipei where there were shops filled with smiling buddhas, gorgeous hand painted fans, and rooms filled with hand carved teakwood furniture. We begged and begged until we got our very own fans to hang on our wall in our bedroom. We had several momentos of our time there, including a lovely set of coffee and end tables with a hand carved pagoda design, and brass vessels plus brass dragon candle stick holders.

Sometimes Mom's helper DeeDee, who lived with us, would take us down to the market and buy us fresh sugar cane as she did her shopping. We were a novelty to the vendors and they loved looking at us American children, touching our hair, mine is extra curly, and patting us.

I have plenty of snake stories to share, and a couple of accidents that happened but all in all Taiwan was a magical place for us. I still have copies of the hand painted Christmas cards we sent out the year we were there.

There is a romance to the orient that is hard to define, and I sure had a fun walk down memory lane as I created this one of a kind necklace. You can find more about it here - Simply Sheryl's

Amethyst... the color of me.

While not a true purple, these glass beads and shells are a shade of amethyst that caught my eye immediately. Having worked in a jewelry store for a bit, I noticed that many stones we assume are a just one color, often come in a variation of the common shades. From what I've garnered in research, a true amethyst is purple with flashes of red. I do like the version with a touch more of the red, but all are so pretty!
Throughout history amethyst has been used to guard against drunkenness and is thought to be helpful in overcoming addiction. It has been used for hearing disorders, insomnia, headaches and other pain. Some sources suggest it is used to stabilize mental disorders. Worn to make the wearer gentle and amiable. Amethyst powers include: dreams, healing, peace, love, spiritual upliftment, courage, psychism, protection against thieves, and happiness. While these beads are glass, and not true amethyst, I wonder if the color itself has magical powers......

This shell pendant is much like a true amethyst in that it is a deep purple, with flashes of red. It's hard to pick that up by photo though so you will have to take my word for it. Clowns and Santas and Jewelry, Oh My!

Hmmm, we shall see if blogger cooperates here.....lol. I'm so torn right now, between jewelry making and finishing up some projects that have been waiting to be finalized. In order to make room in my studio, and you can somewhat see how crowded I am, I'm trying to be diligent. The problem, my days are broken up so much I'm stressing over not having a nice chunk of time to just go at the big stuff.

Jewelry on the other hand, is faster to do, although I do spend a couple of hours on each piece, trying out different beads and combinations before I finally put one together. I really need to get a beading tray, as I think it will help speed things up.

Regardless, I can get things done on a daily basis instead of taking days to finish things. I think I just need to have an attitude adjustment, but I will say I love to see finished products. The jewelry is up for consideration on etsy at Simply Sheryl's.

Gallery Feature In Oregon....

It's been a whirlwind week of visits and art fun. I stopped in Idaho on my way to Oregon and helped a dear friend get her blog going. Calamity is the name of her business, and well worth a stop by to see what she has. I will post a feature on her later and share some of the fun work she does.

I stopped by the gallery I show in to see if Missy would take some of my new art, and yes! She was so excited to see my newest abstract art that she built a front window around those and other spring/summer art I do. How fun! She had good news for me as well. Two of my older art pieces she's showing have sold, so that's a nice bonus. Wish I could stick around and see what you've all been doing, but that will come this week. Have a great weekend all.

Friday's Fish Tale and Flowers WIP'S

A fish story in the making is this future wall hanging. Last year at Wallowa Lake, Oregon a man from Pendleton caught a world record Kokanee Salmon weighing 9.67 lbs, at 27.75 inches long. Wallowa Lake Fishing One of the galleries in Joseph, which is about a mile north of the lake, asked if I could create a fish wall hanging that would be about the same length as this big monster fish, so I've tackled the challenge. Watch, someone will break the record again and I will have to make another one, oh darn? Lol. Actually, these are fun to do. Hopefully this fella will take off to the art show with me on Monday, and be beaded and wired and ready to show at the gallery next week.

This is another one of my fun and funky abstracts in the works, again hopefully destined to go into another gallery in Joseph next week. I'm trying to decide whether I like it better the way you see it above, or below. I still have a few layers of color to add to it, but times getting short so I'd better get this finished today or tomorrow.

My stepson is coming from California today, we go to Kent's parents tomorrow after work, Saturday we celebrate Kent's birthday, and Sunday we are back here to speak in church. I can see me finishing these and one more piece Sunday night as we are going to be sooooo busy for the next few days. Ah well, so much for a relaxing weekend aye? The upside is that I'll be stopping at a friend's place on Monday to spend the night and help her with a blog set up. I'm excited about that as she creates some amazing vintage western art and wall hangings as well as jewelry, so she needs to be on the web! We also get to visit with a teacher we had at church when we were 14. Gee that was a loooong time ago.
Then I will stay with a friend at Wallowa Lake as we have a house sitter I don't want to uproot just for a few days. So I will get to fish with my friend, and we shall see whether we can catch a record trout from her dock. Probably not, but a girl can dream right?

Monday's Mad Dash.....

I only have a moment to run in, post and take off to do other "stuff", but the 3 queens are finally done! Once I put their little felt dots on their stands, sign them and carefully wrap them up, I can get them on their way to Australia where the Queen of Hearts is waiting amongst a bevvy of cats and I'm sure other delightful creations.

I've already started on a fish sculpture for a gallery in Oregon, and need to do some catch up for other opportunities before I make my weekly run in to the in-laws. It sure feels good to get these ladies done.

You know that you should never say never, but I really would love to say I will never commission so many pieces at one time again, at least at this juncture in my life, but then I'm a glutton for a challenge or punishment, however you choose to look at it. I wouldn't mind doing another set of these, on my own time, as I can see some possibilities for changes. It's always that way though isn't it? You start on a project, and before you know it, ideas are whirling around in your head while you are trying to focus on the task at hand. Well, now to the other things I've got to do....have a great Monday all!

ly close to being finished, the Queen of Diamonds and Queen of Spades await their arms and crowns. Their sister, the Queen of Clubs, is only half dressed so she begged out on this photo shoot. I hope to have them finished and on their way to Australia this week, whew! I never thought I would have a problem with a commission, but it seems that as soon as I said yes, life threw me a curve. Luckily the sweet gal who purchased these is an angel and very understanding.
Wish me luck as I attack the house tonight and finally get it in order, so I can get back to these gals and finish up later. I need to take a break and get up off the hinder ender for a bit. Sitting most of the day is not good, but I am very pleased with the progress I've made. Prayers work!

Have you ever had .....

.......... what appears to be a stress dream and not know why? Last night I dreamed I was in Oregon getting ready to help with the Wallowa Valley Festival of Arts, only to discover I had left my two entries back in Utah, EEEK!!! I don't know why it happened; for the first time since I've been entering into this show I have my work done well ahead of time due to the change in set up and the jury process, which is most of the battle in my opinion. Being accepted is the other part, and you can see by this photo that I'm in! So where the dream came from I don't know.
Sure I'm under a lot of stress right now. I live in a never ending, open ended life plan as we are not sure when my father-in-law will pass away. Each week as I drive the 100 miles one way to go spend a couple of days with Mom and Dad, he looks more and more gaunt, and complains of feeling weaker all the time. He sleeps most of the day now, and is in such pain that we just don't know how he stands it. He gets dressed every morning though, with a lot of trouble due to severe arthritis, and will try and do things such as water the lawn, take out the trash, and so on. Sometimes he looks as if he will collapse and we are amazed at how he keeps going. So hubby and I take turns tending to them, he goes in on the weekends and sometimes I go as well, and trying to keep Mom from doing things she will regret as she doesn't see very well and hears even less. I've put in a garden for them and us, and it gives Dad something to tend to in that he makes sure the little Parson's Patch is watered.
When I'm home my job, besides tending the twins 3 days a week is to help keep hubby's spirits up. His job is tremendously stressful, and while he doesn't dump all his problems on me, he is not a very happy camper right now and that wears on me because I hate to see him so frustrated with the mountain of work he has in trying to clean up a school that has been let go for over 10 years now. Add to that trying to keep up with children and grandchildren, church responsibilities and such, it gets so crazy I can't concentrate on the commission I have to finish, much less any other art. If you're like me a messy house is a downer and adds to all that. Right now I feel like a boat without a rudder, directionless and wandering aimlessly adrift. That must be the reason for the dream because I'm actually ready for the show and can't wait to head to Oregon. Thank goodness I get to stay home this weekend! All will work out I know, but it's funny how dreams happen.

In Alaska the "crows" were actually ravens, birds large enough to haul away a cat or small dog. They rivaled the eagles in size and noise.When I hear a " Caw Caw" today I still expect to see these giant shiny black birds, but most often see a much smaller version.

Regardless, crows and ravens are the subject of many an artist's muse. I've tried my hand at them as well, and would like to explore this topic more. I have prints available at Mother's Dream Artworks of these three versions. Have you used crows or ravens in your art?

I've always loved sparkly pretties, especially when they are colorful and wearable. Mom used to have charm bracelets that we would put on and play with when we were doing the dress up thing.We loved to look through all her pretties and try them on, and since she's passed I've gotten a couple of her pretties to remind me of her.

I also love to create gifts of all sorts for friends and loved ones, and anyone whose looked at beads knows you can't just buy a couple of strands. Once you get started, you come up with all sorts of rationales for why you need this or that color or style. What woman doesn't like to have a nice matching set of earrings and bracelet or necklace to match their favorite outfit?

Okay, so maybe there are a couple of women out there, but really..... I would bet truth be told, they have a secret stash of bangles and baubles somewhere they will pull out for that special occasion. For me, that occasion can be as simple as running to Walmart.

I've opened a new shop on etsy to sell jewelry and collectibles. I have a bunch of pretty things created, and will get them all posted here shortly, but here is where I'm starting. Roses are some of the loveliest of flowers with a long tradition of being a symbol of romance and love. They were my mom's favorite flower, so whenever someone wanted to show they cared, roses were the gift for her.
The earliest roses are said to have flourished 35 million-years ago, with rose hips being found in Europe and petrified rose wreaths have been unearthed from ancient Egyptian tombs.
The tradition of giving a red rose to your sweetheart became popular in the 1700’s when King Charles II of Sweden introduced Europe to the Persian custom of the “language of flowers”.
Different colors of roses have special meaning such as RED for romantic love, YELLOW for joy, friendship and affection, DEEP PINK means gratitude and appreciation, LIGHT PINK means admiration, and WHITE means purity, reverence, humility.
The roses in this painting are yellow with an edging of deep pink on the petals, so perhaps they could be for that wonderful friend who brings joy into your life, and you want to show your gratitude, affection and appreciation to. Before you know it summer will be here and fireworks will be lighting up the sky. At least it's supposed to although you can't tell by the weather. I did hear that the meteorologists are saying warm weather is on it's way so it's time to think summer clothes and how to dress up your favorite outfits.

I've created a bracelet and earrings suitable for any nautical or patriotic themed ensemble from gorgeous glass beads.

Another mixed media art piece, created on a wooden scoop. I used stamps, vintage buttons and other tools to create the texture on this piece. Hippie Art?

A little music to go with this post...hopefully....

The other day as I was showing my husband these newest creations he asked when I decided to create hippie art... huh? I asked him what he meant and he said he thought the colors, so bright and the patterns reminded him of California and hippie art. Well duh! Lol... I am a Cali girl born in Salinas... and yes I spent a bit of time on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley right after the riots....

....so I guess it comes naturally? Funny he would see it that way, but I am having fun, and hippie or not, it's a nice change of pace for me. The wood scoop at the top is about 16 inches tall and will hang or sit. The pink and orange and lime green still needs it's backing and frame. I did do the antiquing and some touch ups with color. I wish I had taken photos during the day as I just don't have good lighting in our tiny cave. Hopefully you get the idea.

This one is ready to hang, and again, I will have to try and get some daylight photos as these just don't show the true colors. I antiqued this one as well, and am pleased with the over all result. I can see some fun possibilities with this medium.

I have become so addicted to these textural abstracts! Fun and challenging, as I try out different color combos, they give me a freedom to explore color in a way I've never done before.

I've also re-visited the whole color purple and shades of thing in regards to photos. This is a bit off in color, but as close as I could come. My husband says the painting on the top is done, and ignored both inquiries to this one, so I'm thinking he's not fond of it, or it was just coincidental....lol. I was going for a spring like feel with shades of peach and violet, but am not sure yet if I've done what I could. I threw in green to give contrast. I'm trying to decide if I'm done layering color on both pieces, and if either one should have a final antiquing to bring out the texture more. What do you think?

In my continuing effort to find focus in my art, and make room to work in my tiny studio room I'm getting rid of pieces I know I will never use. Above is a nice batch of wood textile bobbins that would be great for art doll bases or Halloween shakers, among other creations.

These tin canisters are so cool and I had imagined painting a nice apples or cherries border on them and spiffing them up for a kitchen with glass knobs for the tops, but alas, I just can't seem to find the time and so I'm letting these go as well.

Here are a set of children's blocks, some are very old and very cool, but again, I know that I'm never going to get to them. I planned on using them as bases for Christmas creations such as Santas or snowmen. What would you use them for? Bernice had me use the best trims and ribbons to dress up her outfit. As I was sculpting her she made sure I gave her big beautiful eyes, and nice bunny ears so that the big boy bunnies would be sure to be smitten. The Layers of Life and Art

I've been reading "Of Human Bondage" by W. Somerset Maugham. It's the story of a young man with a club foot, who is orphaned at a young age. His discoveries in life and human nature take him through a period when he is in his late teens and early 20's, where he thinks he wants to be an artist, in fact he is sure he has the "genius" for it. He soon finds out though, that his aptitude for art amounts to being able to copy others quite well. After much soul searching, and a compatriots death by starvation and suicide he finally realizes that perhaps he hasn't got what it takes, and asks others their opinion. He is told that while he is good at the mechanics, he has no real "genius" for art. His friends have the mind set that you must have the overwhelming drive, the "do or die" attitude towards art, where all else suffers, even family, so that one can paint. The idea of making money wasn't as important as creating. But, without money, you have no resources to create. Quite a dilemma, wouldn't you say?

That got me to thinking about where my artistic journey is taking me. I love to create holiday figures, or storybook figures such as this White Rabbit, from Alice in Wonderland.

I made him a couple of years ago, and he was sure a fun challenge. I have a tendency to be very literal in my thinking, and that spills over into my art. As much as I would love to create whimsical figures that delight and bring smiles to those who see them, I have an even stronger drive to paint and sculpt in a more serious vein. I would also like to make money at it, so that we can do the things we want to do when hubby retires, and not feel like we have to pinch pennies all the time. Then you throw in the human factor of the needs of those around me. I am so in tune with those around me, that I can't seem to step back and let them find other resources or support so I have more time to create. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, but then am I being arrogant in thinking I'm the only one who can do it right, or do I truly care those around me and want to be helpful.
I find it interesting that I should get "Of Human Bondage" at a stage in my life where I'm assessing where I want to head with my art. Do you ever have those sorts of life coincidences? What are your challenges in your creative ventures?

Abstract Art- Challenging Myself...

Awhile back Alyice Edrich of The Dabbling Mum shared a youtube video of work by Paul Bozzo. It was fascinating to me how he put his pieces together so I decided to try my hand at his technique. My first piece warped as I used a bare canvas, but this one didn't as I used a piece of standard board which is a type of lightweight sheet rock. It's easy to cut, and easy to work with.

Then I gathered stamps, doilies, and tools to create texture just as Paul does. I took a different approach than he, more a spring time theme for the fun of it. It was a blast to try this, and I may do more, perhaps with different themes. Layering the paint and sealer was also interesting as I like bold color but am still learning the whole "what comes first" thing. It's different for different media, some you would start light to dark, others dark to light and this ended up being a bit of both.
I would sure love some feedback on this and how it turned out. Thanks for stopping by. :-)

Okay, rules for taking photos #1 Never wrap something until you know the photos are clear and sharp.... Ahhh well, what can I say, live and learn right?
Among the many projects in my studio were creating this pair of earrings for a family member who has a birthday coming up shortly. Simple with spring colors to perk up any pink lovers ensemble, I sure hope she likes these.

Here's the box I jazzed up to hold the earrings. It's always nice to have "stuff" on hand to make gifts out of isn't it? One of the advantages of being a creative spirit.
Well, back to the studio to work on 3 dolls that were commissioned to go along with my last Queen of Hearts doll, as well as a new art technique I'm testing and a bunny for the upcoming AHA Spring launch. What is going on in your studio these days?

Hmmmm blogger is up to no good again...lol. I have been slogging through back pain and mental fatigue trying to get this piece done, and finally! So I've taken the photos, filled out the entry form for the show, and it's off to the post office in a bit to send the entry off.
I knew it! As soon as I try to add another picture below the text, it pops underneath the other photo, oh well. So here is El Caballo De Calabasa II, a gourd horse who has a bronzed and silver look. Hubby wants me to start on the next one now, while I'm in the groove...:-) It's so nice to have his support. My house is upside down right now, but it will get put back together next week, I think. I now have 3 art dolls as a commission to do, and so it goes. Thanks to all who were cheering me on. I look forward to seeing what you've been up to. How do you help....

As I sit here today sanding away the rough spots on my latest sculpture, my heart wishes it could wipe away the pain our community is feeling right now. We lost a bright young lady this last week to a tragic death. We've been told the perpetrator is in custody and has made a confession. No one has the details yet, and hopefully they won't be splashed across the news as there is already pain enough in our little town and this usually only serves to sensationalize the incident and hurt those who've lost their loved ones.

Both of these young people had promise, and now one is gone, and the other will be put in jail for a very long time. How do you help all the families involved? How do you reach out to them, unlike my sculpture you know the cracks in their lives will be hard put to be repaired if ever. You can't give back a life, and you can't take back an action against another, once committed. So many people were involved in these young lives, and so many will be hurting for a very long time.
And then there's our family, and the struggle with trying to deal with my niece's father's murder in January. We still have no why or who in that tragic incident. Her mother died 6 years ago in a sad and awful way, so my niece has lost both of her parents in a short span of time. We have little contact as she hasn't had the opportunity to be around us much and has her own life with her husband. Yet I know that she will miss/misses her parents. My first instinct has been to want to gather all my family close so I know they are okay. I can't do that as one daughter is far away in Alaska, the other in Alabama, and my son in Oregon. My one grandson is in Arizona. The only consolation I have is that no matter what, I know Heavenly Father is there, and He knows what we need. Please pray for us in Wendover and West Wendover. We are trying to sort this all out and want to be a support to anyone who may need it but sometimes it's so hard to know how....your prayers will surely help.

Oh boy, I told myself I wouldn't be in this predicament again, trying to get something done last minute for the show. They changed the jury process though and want to see the actual pieces for the show so this fella has to be done by the end of this week or so to get my photos and such sent in. Yipes!

I still have the leather tooling design to add to the base, and then painting the piece. Or and smoothing out the rough areas a bit more. Although I do rather like a bit of texture to imply muscle.

So back to work I must get, as the time is flying and it's already March tomorrow! What a whirlwind week this will be for sure! What are you working on right now?

I have so much fun creating these little Easter babies! An egg shape is perfect for all sorts of Easter baby delights, so there will be more to follow.
With the advent or hope of warmer weather, which we will have a taste of this weekend (yippee!), sometimes we have to deal with the rain or muck or melting snow and slush so decorating for Easter is a great way to brighten up your home. I like to bring Spring indoors early by spreading a little color through out ours with my hand crafted Easter goodies. This year I'm hoping to have a feather tree in pastel Easter colors, and I can just imagine how one of these little fellas would look underneath it. In the mean time, I'm offering some one of a kind creations in my etsy shop for you to enjoy as well. :-)

What to do with a cute little pocket that had hot cocoa in it I wondered. The plaid pattern was too nice to just toss the pocket away, so I trimmed the top flap off, added all sorts of doo dads and fluff, and whaalaa! a Victorian style Valentine treat pocket for that special someone. This inspired me to create some of my own by hand, and they will be showing up soon. For now, this little goodie pocket can be found at my etsy shop.

A gift for my daughter, hand made stationery

As I talked to my oldest daughter recently she mentioned that she was thinking of hand writing letters to her friends in Alaska. With her birthday coming up this week I decided to experiment and see if I could make some art stationery for her. I first thought of scanning all sorts of lace trims and such and then it donned on me, oh duh! I have some of my art sketches on the computer already, so why not try those?!

These aren't too fancy mind you; hey it's a start, and I'm going to experiment with different scanned items to see if I can add a touch of vintage to my stationery as well, but these turned out pretty nice. My favorite is the Pansies with it's lavender lines. I created lined sheets without the art as well, so she could have the first page with the art and the rest just for writing. These are done two to a standard sheet of paper so they are smaller, the half sheet size, which I personally like more. She will get a stack of all three designs with a request to let me know which she likes the most. So here's to a happy birthday for my Stephanie!

I'm trying to make a mad dash in to share one of my latest WIP's. We shall see if blogger cooperates. :-) This roly poly little bunny is about 4" tall. I have a little chicklet that's waiting for it's ruffle but I will wait until the twins are down for a nap again. I'm even thinking of a little kitty in this style. These are so much fun to make that I may end up using all my egg shapes to create more, perhaps a puppy as well? I'll keep you posted. What are you working on right now?

Adorable Vintage Style Sketches

My mother-in-law creates the cutest little sketches! Considering the fact that she is almost legally blind I think she does fantastic. Coming from that era where they lived by the motto, "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without", she will put little illustrations such as these on presents that she's wrapped with white paper she has kept, or on the corner of a birthday letter envelope or even the letter itself. She will cut out pictures of flowers and such from magazines and ads to use as stickers as well. I've been saving all I've gotten from her to use for embroidery designs on baby blankets and such. Our nephew and his wife just had their first baby so I asked Mom to create some pictures I could use to make something for the new little one. Here's what she did for me, so I'm using the one on the top left in a wall hanging with the baby's name and date on it. I can't wait to show you what it turns out like. It may take a little bit though as I save working on it for when I'm with Mom and Dad so I can do it while chatting with them. After I get the embroidery done I will be covering the mat with a quilted cover that has tiny buttons from great grandma's button jar and "pearls" from a little necklace this little baby's grandma had when she was little. A little bit of history in the design that I will type up and add to the back of the finished work. I found a shadow box frame with mat at the DI store that will work perfectly for all of this. So many of you have inspired me with your creative ways, so I credit you for all you do. I will share a photo of what I'm doing soon.

One of the very talented members of Creating the Hive shared a video with us this week, which had me looking at more by this artist so one thing led to another..... Alyice Edrich shared this video Bozzoart So I gathered buttons, stamps, stencils, wood, and clay as my texture paste was too sticky. Now I have to wait for it to dry and see whether clay works for this. I know there may be cracks, but am keeping my fingers crossed.....

I'm not sure why the Queen of Hearts theme has been my muse this year, but it's been an adventure for sure. The is the last of the ideas I wanted to work out, so now I can move on to other ideas that are fighting for space in the front recesses of my tiny little brain.

This lovely lady was created using clay, wood, wire, fabric and lots of embellishing trims. She is now up for consideration on ebay. I wonder where she will end up?
So now I'm on to bunnies and western art....
